Jin Jun Mei is a refined Chinese black tea prized for its softness, complexity, and naturally sweet character. Traditionally linked to the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian, it is typically crafted from tender spring buds, which gives the tea its fine leaf appearance, elegant aroma, and unusually smooth texture in the cup.

In taste, Jin Jun Mei is layered without being heavy. A well-made lot can open with notes of honey, flowers, ripe fruit, and soft caramelised warmth, sometimes moving into impressions of cocoa, biscuit, roasted sweet potato, or dried longan. The liquor is usually clear and amber-gold, with a lingering sweetness that stays on the palate after the sip.

What makes this tea distinctive is its balance: it has the depth of a black tea, but in a more polished and delicate register. Rather than pushing tannin or heaviness, Jin Jun Mei is valued for sweetness, fragrance, and a rounded, velvety feel that unfolds gradually over multiple infusions.

Taste profile

Expect a cup that is smooth, sweet, floral, and gently fruity, with notes that may suggest honey, nectar, dried longan, cocoa, biscuit, butterscotch, roasted sweet potato, or soft spice depending on the lot and the brewing style. The finish is usually clean, warm, and persistent rather than brisk or sharply astringent.

Properties

As a black tea, Jin Jun Mei is fully oxidized and naturally contains caffeine, polyphenols, and L-theanine, compounds commonly found in tea. On a product page, the most accurate way to describe its properties is through the experience it offers: a smoother, sweeter, more elegant black tea profile with a gently uplifting quality rather than an aggressive or overly tannic one.
